Q1 (a) · 10 marks
Discuss various applications of psychology with reference to war and peace.
Model answer
- Psychology serves both the conduct of war and the construction of peace.
- In war: selection and placement (from Army Alpha/Beta to today’s SSB, which assesses OLQs through psychological testing), training and stress inoculation, management of combat stress and PTSD, psychological operations and morale maintenance, and human-factors design of equipment.
- In peace: conflict resolution through negotiation and mediation (integrative bargaining, GRIT’s graduated reciprocation), reduction of enemy images and mirror-image perceptions, contact hypothesis interventions between hostile groups (Sherif’s superordinate goals), peace education, and post-conflict trauma rehabilitation and reconciliation, as in truth-and-reconciliation processes.
- Psychologists also study obedience and dehumanisation (Milgram, Zimbardo) to explain atrocity and design safeguards.
- The discipline’s contribution is thus double: it makes force more humane and effective where unavoidable, and it supplies the cognitive and social tools, empathy, de-categorisation, superordinate identity, that make peace durable.

Discuss the role of environmental factors in prenatal development.

- Prenatal development is genetically scripted but environmentally regulated.
- Teratogens are the clearest case: alcohol (foetal alcohol spectrum disorders), nicotine (low birth weight, prematurity), drugs like thalidomide, and infections such as rubella, each with damage depending on timing, the embryonic period of organogenesis (weeks 3–8) is the window of maximum vulnerability.
- Maternal nutrition shapes neural-tube formation (folate) and later metabolic risk; famine studies (Dutch Hunger Winter) show lifelong effects.
- Maternal stress raises cortisol, associated with irritability and attention problems in infants.
- Maternal age, Rh incompatibility, radiation and environmental toxins (lead, mercury) add further risk, while antenatal care, maternal health and emotional support operate protectively. Epigenetics now shows environment altering gene expression in utero. The examinable point: the womb is not a sealed chamber but the child’s first environment, which is why maternal-health programmes are developmental psychology applied as public policy.

Differentiate among descriptive, evaluative, diagnostic and prognostic research.

- Descriptive research answers what is: it records behaviour or characteristics as they exist, surveys of adolescent screen time, observational studies, without manipulating variables.
- Evaluative research answers did it work: it judges a programme or intervention against its objectives, as in assessing whether a mid-day meal scheme improved attention; its yardstick is effectiveness.
- Diagnostic research answers why is it so: it identifies the causes or correlates of an existing condition, why dropout is high in one district, moving from symptom to underlying factor, as clinical diagnosis does for an individual.
- Prognostic research answers what will happen: it forecasts future outcomes from present indicators, as when early aggression is used to predict later conduct disorder, or selection tests predict job success. The four differ in purpose and time-orientation, present description, backward-looking causation, judgement of a completed effort, and forward prediction, though a single applied study may pass through all four.

“Negative reinforcement and punishment are different.” Justify your point of view with relevant examples.
Model answer
- The two are opposites in effect, though routinely confused.
- Negative reinforcement strengthens a behaviour by removing an aversive stimulus.
- punishment weakens a behaviour by adding an aversive consequence (positive punishment) or removing something valued (negative punishment). Taking an aspirin is negatively reinforced, the headache’s removal makes you likelier to take it again. Fastening a seatbelt to stop the warning beep, or a child completing homework to end parental nagging, are the same mechanism. By contrast, a fine for speeding or confiscating a phone aims to make the behaviour less likely. The confusion arises because both involve something unpleasant; the test is always the direction of the change in behaviour. The distinction matters practically: negative reinforcement builds stable escape and avoidance learning, while punishment suppresses without teaching an alternative, works only when certain and immediate, and carries side-effects of fear, avoidance of the punisher and modelled aggression.

How do the ‘leaky bucket’ and ‘working memory’ approaches differ in their explanation of the short-term memory?
Model answer
- The leaky bucket view, the classical STM of Atkinson–Shiffrin, treats short-term memory as a passive, limited container: about 7±2 chunks (Miller) held for 15–30 seconds, with items “leaking” through decay and displacement unless rehearsal tops the bucket up.
- Its emphasis is on capacity and loss.
- The working memory approach (Baddeley and Hitch) replaces the container with a multi-component workspace: a central executive allocating attention, a phonological loop for verbal material, a visuospatial sketchpad, and the later episodic buffer integrating information with long-term memory.
- Here the short-term system does not merely store; it manipulates, holding numbers while computing, holding premises while reasoning.
- Evidence: dual-task studies showing verbal and spatial tasks interfere within, not across, subsystems, inexplicable if there were one bucket.
- In short, one theory explains why we forget quickly; the other explains how we think while remembering.

Critically examine the top-down and bottom-up processing in perception. How can we make the combined use of both the processing in everyday life? Support your answer with appropriate examples.
Model answer
Bottom-up processing builds perception from the stimulus upward, features to patterns to meaning, as in Gibson’s direct perception: the optic array is rich enough that reading a crisp printed word needs little else. Top-down processing runs from the head downward, expectations, context and knowledge shape what we see, as in Gregory’s constructivism: we read sloppy handwriting because the sentence tells us what the word must be, and the same character is read as 13 or B depending on whether its neighbours are numbers or letters.
- Critically, neither is sufficient alone.
- Pure bottom-up cannot explain context effects, perceptual set, or why ambiguous figures flip; pure top-down cannot explain accurate perception of the novel, and predicts more hallucination than occurs.
- Illusions show top-down defaults misfiring; proof-reading errors show expectation overriding input.
- Perception is therefore an interactive cycle (Neisser): schemas direct exploration, stimulus data correct schemas.
Everyday combination: a radiologist scans systematically (bottom-up) while diagnostic hypotheses direct attention (top-down); a driver in fog slows to gather data and leans on route knowledge; an examiner reads an answer for what it says, then re-reads against the marking scheme. The skill is knowing when to trust data over expectation, and reversing when the environment turns unfamiliar.

What makes psychology a more scientific discipline in comparison to other disciplines of social sciences? Elucidate your answer with examples and evidences.
Model answer
- Psychology’s claim rests on method, measurement and the unit of analysis.
- First, it relies more heavily than its neighbours on the true experiment, random assignment, manipulation, control, permitting causal inference: Bandura’s Bobo doll or memory interference studies have no real equivalent in history or political science, where variables can rarely be manipulated.
- Second, psychometrics: standardised tests with demonstrable reliability and validity, operational definitions, and quantification of even subjective states (psychophysics from Fechner onward).
- Third, its object, the individual organism, allows laboratory control and replication in a way that societies and economies do not, and links it directly to biology through neuroscience (EEG, fMRI evidence).
- Fourth, institutionalised self-correction: the replication crisis, met with pre-registration and open data, is itself evidence of scientific culture.
- The claim needs qualification, sociology and economics also use rigorous statistics, and psychology’s constructs remain inferential, but in the degree of experimental control and standardised measurement, psychology sits closest to the natural-science model.

In what ways can sampling bias affect the accuracy of research outcomes? Discuss the role of data analysis and interpretation in generating meaningful research findings.
Model answer
- Sampling bias makes the sample systematically unlike the population, so findings misestimate reality however large the N. Classic forms: selection bias (the Literary Digest 1936 poll, drawn from telephone owners, predicted the wrong president from 2.4 million responses).
- volunteer bias (self-selected participants are more motivated and educated).
- survivorship bias.
- convenience samples of undergraduates, the WEIRD problem, wrongly generalised to humanity; attrition that leaves a non-random remainder. Effects: inflated or deflated estimates, spurious correlations, and interventions that fail when scaled to the real population.
- Data analysis and interpretation convert raw numbers into defensible claims: choosing tests matched to the data’s level and distribution, reporting effect sizes and confidence intervals rather than bare p-values, checking assumptions, and distinguishing statistical from practical significance.
- Interpretation then supplies the discipline’s honesty, ruling out confounds, resisting the leap from correlation to cause, acknowledging limits of generalisation.
- Sound analysis cannot rescue a biased sample, but transparent analysis tells the reader exactly how far the findings may travel.

Discuss various types of long-term memory. Explain how primacy and recency effect illustrate the serial position effect in transferring information from short-term memory to long-term memory.

- Long-term memory divides first into explicit (declarative) and implicit (non-declarative).
- Explicit memory comprises episodic memory, personally experienced events located in time and place (your first interview), and semantic memory, general knowledge without context (Delhi is India’s capital).
- Tulving’s distinction is supported by dissociations: amnesics lose episodic recall yet retain semantic knowledge.
- Implicit memory includes procedural skills (cycling, typing), priming, and conditioned responses, expressed in performance without conscious recollection, as H.M. showed by improving on mirror-drawing he never remembered practising.
- The serial position effect: recall of a list is best for the first items (primacy) and last items (recency), worst in the middle.
- Primacy occurs because early items receive more rehearsal and pass into LTM; recency because the last items still sit in STM at recall.
- The proof is the double dissociation: a filled 30-second delay abolishes recency but spares primacy, while faster presentation weakens primacy but leaves recency intact.
- The U-shaped curve is thus a live demonstration of two stores with different mechanics, rehearsal-driven transfer into LTM, and a fragile, displaceable STM.

“The aim of grounded theory analysis is to develop inductive theory which is closely derived from the data.” Elaborate upon the statement with respect to the analytic procedures followed in the grounded theory approach.
Model answer
- Grounded theory (Glaser and Strauss) reverses the hypothetico-deductive sequence: theory is not tested against data but discovered in it. The procedures enforce this closeness.
- Open coding fractures transcripts line by line into concepts, using the participant’s own terms (in-vivo codes).
- Constant comparison sets every new incident against existing codes, sharpening categories and their properties.
- Axial coding reassembles the fractured data, relating categories to conditions, actions and consequences.
- selective coding integrates them around a core category that tells the study’s central story. Throughout, memo-writing records the analyst’s developing abstractions, and theoretical sampling lets the emerging theory decide what data to gather next, sampling for concepts, not representativeness, until theoretical saturation, when new data add nothing. The result is middle-range theory whose every claim can be traced downward to instances in the data. Its discipline lies exactly there: the researcher may rise to abstraction only by steps the data can support.

Under what research conditions would you choose multiple regression over simple linear regression? Explain the assumptions of multiple regression with the help of examples.
Model answer
Choose multiple regression when an outcome plausibly has several determinants whose joint and unique contributions matter: predicting exam performance from intelligence, study hours and anxiety together; when you must control for confounds (does stress predict illness after controlling for age and income?); when comparing the relative importance of predictors via standardised betas; or when a single predictor leaves large unexplained variance. Simple regression suffices only for one predictor–one outcome questions.
- Assumptions: linearity (each predictor relates linearly to the outcome, anxiety’s inverted-U with performance violates this).
- independence of observations (students nested in coaching centres violate it).
- normality of residuals.
- homoscedasticity (residual spread constant across predicted values, income data typically fan out).
- no severe multicollinearity (intelligence and vocabulary correlating .9 make betas unstable, check VIF); measurement without gross error; and adequate sample size relative to predictors. Violations do not merely weaken the model, they mislead it, which is why checking assumptions is part of the analysis, not an afterthought.

Explain how learning takes place through classical conditioning. Discuss the role of reflexive behaviour and contingency in the acquisition of conditioned behaviour.
Model answer
- In classical conditioning (Pavlov), a neutral stimulus acquires the power to evoke a response by being paired with a stimulus that already evokes it.
- The unconditioned stimulus (food) produces an unconditioned response (salivation) reflexively; after repeated pairings the bell, now a conditioned stimulus, evokes salivation as a conditioned response.
- Acquisition is fastest with forward, short-delay pairing; extinction, spontaneous recovery, generalisation (Little Albert’s fear spreading to furry objects) and discrimination complete the picture.
Reflexive behaviour is the foundation: conditioning does not create new responses but transfers existing reflexes, salivation, startle, fear, nausea, to new signals. This is why emotional and physiological responses (phobias, taste aversions, placebo effects) condition so readily while arbitrary acts do not.
- Contingency is the modern correction to mere contiguity.
- Rescorla showed pairing is not enough: the CS must predict the US.
- If shocks occur equally often with and without the tone, no conditioning develops despite many pairings; a CS that adds no information (Kamin’s blocking) is not learned.
- The organism behaves like a statistician, learning P(US|CS) > P(US|no CS), which recasts conditioning as the learning of predictive relations, not the stamping-in of associations.

What do you understand by ‘inattentional blindness’? How can subliminal stimulus affect our behaviour?
Model answer
- Inattentional blindness is the failure to perceive a fully visible stimulus because attention is engaged elsewhere, perception requires attention, not merely open eyes.
- In Simons and Chabris’s study, about half the observers counting basketball passes missed a person in a gorilla suit walking through the scene; radiologists have missed a gorilla inserted into lung scans.
- Real-world costs: drivers on phones failing to see motorcyclists, security screeners missing rare targets.
- It differs from change blindness, where a change across views goes undetected.
- A subliminal stimulus falls below the threshold of conscious report yet is registered.
- Effects are real but modest and short-lived: subliminal primes speed recognition of related words; mere-exposure raises liking for unseen shapes; a flashed brand can nudge choice only when the relevant motive already exists, thirsty participants poured more of a primed drink, sated ones did not.
- Claims of subliminal mind-control (the “Eat Popcorn” hoax) are discredited.
- Together the two phenomena make one point: consciousness is a narrow gate, much is processed without awareness, and much in plain sight is never processed at all.

- Preoperational (2–7): language and pretend play flower, but thought is egocentric (three-mountains task), centred on one dimension, dominated by appearance, and marked by animism; conservation fails.

- conservation of number, mass, then volume (horizontal décalage), reversibility, seriation, classification and transitivity; logic works, but only on the concrete.
- Formal operational (11+): abstract and hypothetico-deductive reasoning, systematic testing on the pendulum problem, proportionality, thinking about thinking, and adolescent idealism. Later research finds infants more competent and stage boundaries softer than Piaget held, but the sequence and its milestones remain the backbone of cognitive-developmental assessment.

How does knowledge influence deductive reasoning? Give suitable examples.
Model answer
- Deduction is formally content-free, validity depends on structure, yet human deduction is saturated with knowledge.
- The belief-bias effect: people accept invalid conclusions that are believable (“All flowers need water; roses need water; so roses are flowers”) and reject valid ones that are unbelievable.
- On Wason’s selection task, only ~10% solve the abstract version, but most solve the identical logic as a drinking-age rule, content activates pragmatic reasoning schemas and cheater-detection.
- Knowledge supplies mental models (Johnson-Laird): familiar content makes the right models easier to construct, but also tempts us to stop at the first believable one.
- Expertise helps, logicians and statisticians resist content effects better, while strong prior belief distorts syllogisms about, say, caste or politics.
- So knowledge is double-edged: it scaffolds comprehension of premises, yet substitutes plausibility for validity.
- Training the separation of “is it true?” from “does it follow?” is precisely what formal education in logic gives.

Explain the relationship between emotion and cognition. Examine how feelings shape our thoughts.

- Emotion and cognition are interwoven systems, not rivals.
- Appraisal theories (Lazarus) hold that emotion follows cognitive evaluation, the same exam result produces pride or despair depending on interpretation; Zajonc showed affect can also run ahead of cognition (mere exposure, snap likes and dislikes), and LeDoux’s amygdala “low road” gives this a neural basis.
- Traffic runs both ways: thoughts generate feelings, and feelings steer thought.
- Mood-congruent memory makes the sad recall losses; the affect heuristic converts liking into judged safety and benefit; anxiety narrows attention to threat while positive mood broadens and builds (Fredrickson), aiding creativity but loosening scrutiny; anger raises risk-taking, fear lowers it.
- Damasio’s somatic marker patients show the limit case: with emotion lesioned out, “pure reason” cannot even choose an appointment time.
- Feelings, then, are not noise in the cognitive machine, they are data and priority-setters, indispensable and, unexamined, biasing.

Examine the role of causal attribution in the formation of prejudice and discrimination.
Model answer
- Prejudice is manufactured, in part, by biased answers to “why did they do that?” The ultimate attribution error (Pettigrew): outgroup failures are explained by disposition (“they are lazy”), outgroup successes explained away as luck, quotas or exception, the mirror image of how we treat our own group.
- Group-serving attributions harden stereotypes into “evidence”: poverty attributed to character rather than to discrimination or structure justifies withholding help (the just-world hypothesis, victims must deserve their fate).
- The fundamental attribution error compounds it by underweighting situations generally; illusory correlation links minority groups to rare negative acts.
- These attributions then license discrimination: if disadvantage is self-inflicted, exclusion feels fair.
- Interventions work on exactly this lever, attributional retraining, presenting structural causes, empathy induction and contact that forces situation-based explanations.
- Attribution is thus not a bystander but the cognitive engine that converts category into contempt, and correcting it is a route to reducing both prejudice and the behaviour it excuses.

How does the critical period hypothesis support the idea of biological predisposition?
Model answer
- The critical period hypothesis holds that certain capacities must be acquired within a maturationally fixed window, after which acquisition is incomplete or impossible.
- Its force for biological predisposition is that the window is set by the organism, not the environment.
- Evidence: Lorenz’s imprinting in the first hours after hatching; Hubel and Wiesel’s kittens, permanently cortically blind after early visual deprivation though the eyes were intact; language, Lenneberg’s claim that acquisition must precede puberty, supported by Genie’s failure to attain syntax after rescue at 13, second-language ultimate attainment declining with age of arrival (Johnson and Newport), and late-signing deaf children’s persistent grammatical deficits.
- If learning alone built these capacities, timing should not matter; that identical input yields normal development at 2 and failure at 14 shows a genetically timed neural readiness, heightened plasticity that opens and closes on schedule.
- Environment supplies content, but biology supplies the calendar: the strongest sense in which nature constrains nurture.

Do our dreams represent unconscious wish fulfillment? Discuss the meaning and functions of dreams.
Model answer
- For Freud, yes: dreams are the “royal road to the unconscious”, disguised fulfilments of repressed wishes, latent content converted into manifest imagery by dream-work (condensation, displacement, symbolisation).
- The claim is unfalsifiable and empirically weak: dreams of trauma, anxiety and failure fit poorly, and interpretation cannot be checked.
- Rival accounts: activation-synthesis (Hobson and McCarley), the cortex weaves a story from random REM brainstem activity, meaning added after the fact; the cognitive/continuity view (Hall, Domhoff), dreams rehearse our waking concerns with the same content networks; threat-simulation (Revonsuo), a virtual-reality rehearsal of dangers; and consolidation theories linking REM to emotional memory processing and overnight mood regulation, with problem-solving effects (Mendeleev’s table, Loewi’s experiment) as occasional bonuses.
- A fair verdict: dreams are meaningful without being coded wishes, they reflect motivation and emotion, serve memory and affect-regulation functions, and Freud’s specific mechanism survives mainly as history.

What do you mean by defense mechanism? Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy defense mechanisms. Explain how it influences personality of an individual.
Model answer
Defense mechanisms (Freud; systematised by Anna Freud) are unconscious strategies of the ego that distort or exclude reality to protect against anxiety arising from id–superego conflict. They are universal; what varies is maturity and rigidity.
- Healthy (mature) defenses, Vaillant’s hierarchy, manage distress while preserving reality: sublimation (aggression into sport or surgery), humour, altruism, suppression (conscious postponement of a worry until the crisis passes).
- Unhealthy defenses distort reality or damage relationships: denial of illness, projection of one’s hostility onto others (the paranoid style), regression, acting out, splitting into all-good and all-bad.
- Neurotic middle-ground defenses, repression, reaction formation, rationalisation, displacement, intellectualisation, are costly when habitual.
- Influence on personality: defenses used repeatedly become character.
- A person whose signature is sublimation and humour appears resilient, warm and productive; one organised around projection and denial appears rigid, blame-shifting and brittle under stress.
- Longitudinal work (Vaillant’s Grant Study) finds mature defense style predicting mental health, marriage stability and career success decades later.
- Defenses are thus not episodic tricks but the grain of the personality, and their maturation is one workable definition of psychological growth.

What kind of heuristics is used by the people while making decisions? Also, discuss the errors and biases in group decision making.
Model answer
- Heuristics (Tversky and Kahneman) are fast rules that trade accuracy for economy.
- Availability: probability judged by ease of recall, plane crashes feel likelier after news coverage.
- Representativeness: judging by resemblance to a prototype, producing base-rate neglect and the conjunction fallacy (“Linda”).
- Anchoring and adjustment: estimates gravitate to an initial number, as every bargainer knows. Add the affect heuristic (liking substitutes for risk analysis) and recognition heuristics. They are adaptive defaults, and systematic error generators.
- Groups add their own pathologies.
- Groupthink (Janis): cohesive groups under directive leaders suppress dissent for concurrence, illusions of invulnerability and unanimity, self-censorship, mindguards (Bay of Pigs, Challenger).
- Group polarisation: discussion pushes members toward a more extreme version of their initial lean.
- Shared-information bias: groups rehearse what everyone knows and neglect unique information.
- Social loafing, escalation of commitment, and conformity pressure (Asch) complete the list. Remedies follow directly: devil’s advocacy, leader speaks last, secret ballots, and structured formats that force unshared information to the table.

How is crystallized intelligence different from fluid intelligence? Discuss their relation to ageing and memory.
Model answer
- Cattell and Horn split g into two.
- Fluid intelligence (Gf) is the capacity to reason in novel situations independent of schooling, pattern induction, working-memory manipulation, speeded problem solving (Raven’s matrices).
- Crystallized intelligence (Gc) is accumulated knowledge and skill, vocabulary, general information, expert judgement, culture-laden and education-dependent. Gf is the engine of new learning; Gc is its stored product.
- Ageing dissociates them: Gf peaks in the twenties and declines steadily, slower processing speed (Salthouse), shrinking working memory, prefrontal change, while Gc holds or grows into the sixties and beyond, which is why older judges and physicians outperform on knowledge-rich tasks while losing speed on novel ones.
- Memory maps onto the same split: working memory and effortful episodic encoding (fluid-dependent) decline with age.
- semantic, procedural and recognition memory (crystallized-supported) are largely spared. Practical corollary: the old compensate by converting fluid problems into crystallized ones, experience, routines and accumulated schemas, the psychology behind “wisdom outlasting quickness”.

Discuss the nature and functions of attitudes and values with reference to development of human behaviour. Suggest relevant strategies for attitude change and development.
Model answer
Attitudes are learned evaluative dispositions toward objects, persons or issues, with cognitive, affective and behavioural components; they vary in strength, accessibility and ambivalence, and predict behaviour best when specific, strong and salient (attitude–behaviour gap; LaPiere). Values are deeper trans-situational goals, ideals like honesty, security, achievement (Rokeach’s terminal and instrumental; Schwartz’s circle), that rank-order attitudes beneath them.
Functions (Katz): knowledge (simplifying the world), instrumental/utilitarian (rewards and punishments), ego-defensive (protecting self-esteem, prejudice often lives here), and value-expressive (announcing who we are). Development: family and early socialisation, direct experience and conditioning, peers and reference groups, media, and culture, attitudes forming through learning, values consolidating through identification.

- Stimulants raise CNS arousal by boosting monoamine transmission.
- Caffeine blocks adenosine, alertness, delayed sleep.
- Nicotine stimulates acetylcholine receptors, arousal with paradoxical calm, high dependence.
- Amphetamines and cocaine flood dopamine and noradrenaline, euphoria, confidence, insomnia, then crash; chronic use brings paranoia, stereotypy and stimulant psychosis.
- Depressants dampen CNS activity, chiefly by enhancing GABA.

Psychometric (objective) tests present standardised items with fixed response formats, MMPI, 16PF, NEO-PI-R, scored against norms, grounded in trait theory.
Advantages of projectives: hard to fake because the “right” answer is opaque; reach material the person cannot or will not report; rich idiographic detail; useful in clinical exploration and with the less literate. Disadvantages: weak reliability and validity (Exner’s system only partly repairs the Rorschach), scorer subjectivity, time and training costs, and poor norms.
- Advantages of psychometric tests: standardisation, economy, group administration, demonstrable reliability, validity scales and norm-referenced comparison, hence their use in selection and research.
- Disadvantages: transparent items invite faking and social desirability (partly checked by lie scales), response sets, forced self-knowledge, and cultural loading of items.
- Best practice is complementary use: the objective test to measure, the projective to generate hypotheses the clinician then tests.

- Intellectual disability (the current term for mental retardation) is defined by three joint criteria: significantly subaverage intelligence (IQ below about 70, i.e. two standard deviations under the mean), concurrent deficits in adaptive behaviour (communication, self-care, social and practical skills), and onset in the developmental period.
- A low score alone does not diagnose, testing error, language, culture and schooling can depress IQ while adaptive functioning is intact; modern systems (AAIDD, DSM-5) grade severity by support needs, not score alone.
- The classical Stanford-Binet-based classification, still asked in examinations: Borderline 70–79 (historically 68–83 on S-B norms).
- Mild 50/55–69, “educable”, about 85% of cases, capable of schooling to late-primary level and independent living.
- Moderate 35/40–49/54, “trainable”, self-care with supervision.
- Severe 20/25–34/39, limited speech, close supervision.
- Profound below 20/25, pervasive support. The examinable point: IQ locates the range, adaptive behaviour and age of onset make the diagnosis.
